Free Enneagram Instincts Test
Every human being carries all three of the Enneagram instinctual variants. One of them leads. This test identifies which one is running your attention before you have decided to pay attention.
Nine questions. Three possible outcomes: Self-Preservation, Sexual, or Social. Your dominant instinct explains why two people with the same Enneagram type can look so different in daily life.
How the Free Enneagram
Instincts Test Works
The three Enneagram instincts - Self-Preservation, Sexual, and Social - were introduced into the modern enneagram tradition by Claudio Naranjo in the 1970s and refined significantly by Beatrice Chestnut in The Complete Enneagram (2013). They describe biological survival strategies that predate the Enneagram framework itself: attention to physical resources and comfort, attention to one-to-one bonding and intensity, and attention to group belonging and position within a collective.
The test presents nine scenarios where your dominant instinct would direct your attention differently from the other two. Each question offers three options - one aligned with each instinct. Choose the one that most closely describes where your attention actually goes, not what you think it should go toward. The result identifies your dominant instinct with a full description of what that instinct is, how it shows up in daily life, and how it combines with your Enneagram type to produce one of 27 distinct subtypes.
Instinct is a refinement within your Enneagram type, not a separate coordinate of the INTI NAN pathway system. Where the Free Enneagram Test maps your Kay Pacha coordinate for the pathway architecture, instinct adds depth to what the type does with the survival strategies underneath it.
About This Test
What are the three Enneagram instincts?
The three instincts - Self-Preservation (SP), Sexual (SX, also called One-to-One), and Social (SO) - are survival strategies that predate the Enneagram framework. Every person carries all three; one dominates. Your dominant instinct is what your attention automatically tracks before you decide to pay attention.
Do I need to know my Enneagram type to take this test?
No. The Free Enneagram Instincts Test identifies your dominant instinct independent of your Enneagram type. Instinct and type are separate dimensions - once you know both, you know your subtype (for example, SP-4 or SX-8). If you do not know your type yet, take the Free Enneagram Test first, then return here.
How long does the Free Enneagram Instincts Test take?
The Free Enneagram Instincts Test has nine questions and takes approximately three minutes to complete. Results are instant and identify your dominant instinct with description, traits, and notes on how it combines with your Enneagram type.
Does the Karpay use my instinct?
No. The Karpay maps three coordinates - Enneagram type, Soul Type, and Healing Path - into one of 189 named pathways™. Instincts are additional refinement within your Enneagram type but are not part of the pathway architecture. This test gives you useful depth for self-understanding within Kay Pacha specifically.

The three instinctual variants (Self-Preservation, Sexual, Social) were introduced into the modern enneagram tradition by Claudio Naranjo in Character and Neurosis (Gateways/IDHHB, 1994). The 27-subtypes model - each of the nine Enneagram types expressing through each of the three instincts - was mapped and refined by Beatrice Chestnut in The Complete Enneagram: 27 Paths to Greater Self-Knowledge (She Writes Press, 2013).
The nine-type Enneagram framework itself was developed in its modern psychological form by Oscar Ichazo and Claudio Naranjo in the 1960s and 1970s and has been extensively documented by the Enneagram Institute. The INTI NAN system adapts the Enneagram as one of three dimensions that together map a person's full pathway.
The three-world cosmological structure (Hanan Pacha, Kay Pacha, Ukhu Pacha) is drawn from Andean Q'ero tradition, the indigenous Andean people widely regarded as the keepers of the original Inca spiritual tradition. For further reading see the Pacha (Inca mythology) article and Constance Classen, Inca Cosmology and the Human Body (University of Utah Press, 1993).
Disclaimer: The INTI NAN pathway system is a framework for self-discovery and personal growth, not medical, therapeutic, or psychological advice, and not a religious teaching. Pathway descriptions and the Quechua and Andean concepts used throughout the platform are intended to support reflection and should be interpreted as invitations to explore, not definitive diagnoses, prescriptions, or representations of the full depth of living Andean tradition.
